Arizona's Proposition 107, the "Protect Marriage Amendment", is losing by 48.5%-51.5%, with 94.0% of precincts counted as of midnight. If this holds up, Arizona will become the first state to beat back an anti-gay marriage ban constituional amendment at the ballot box. The tide may be turning.

Kyrsten Sinema, an openly bisexual Democratic member of the Arizona House of Representatives, led the opposition effort as chair of Arizona Together.

In Colorado, the marriage ban Amendment 43 is passing with 56.9%, with 62.3% of precincts reporting; but Referendum I, which would allow partner benefits, is also passing, with 54.7%.

Marriage bans are passing in the other six states: Virginia, Wisconsin, South Dakota, South Carolina, Idaho, and Tennessee. As it happens, the South Dakota ban is ahead by only 52.1%-47.9% -- in one of the most rural states in the union.

Freedom Democrats suspect that the Arizona, Colorado, and South Dakota models will be intensively studied by same-sex marriage proponents in the coming weeks.
